This is the true story of a young Cambodian woman who has challenged her country’s social and cultural norms throughout her life and as a consequence has become an ambassador for female empowerment.

Growing up on an island in the Bassac River, removed from many of the conveniences of modern life and surrounded by traditional customs and thought, Thavry’s story is one of inspiration to females around the world.

As Cambodia slowly recovers from the great turmoil and destruction of civil war and the Khmer Rouge, rural life largely returned to familiar, century-old ways. For women, this meant marrying young, bearing children and working on the family farm, with little say in anything.

But with support from her parents, whose own childhood experiences had been greatly shaped by the four years of Khmer Rouge rule, Thavry was taught to value education as a means of breaking from the confines of the village and to forge her own independent future.

Her inspiring story shows that encouraging young women to believe in their dreams – and supporting them to do so – can lead to a freedom to learn and grow unknown to earlier generations.

There's nothing is better than keep on looking at her photo on the cover each time I check my book title for thing to read in my book library. And it's remind me of a 48hours on the island spending time with her and the family to learn deeper into the book. Of cause, as a woman who is growing up in a society like our (her and mine), Thavry is illustrating so well on what was really happening and what is happening now. I am sure most of the women out there somewhere would possibly hang in there in the same norm with disrespectful and unvalued woman decision making or their empowering energy. A Proper Woman eBook Thavry Thon Peter Ford Reviews

Thavry is a strong force in the world. She is certainly one of the strong minded change agents we need to continue to break down the barriers women face all over the world. I thoroughly enjoyed reading her story and how she has challenged the role of women in Cambodia and had the wonderful strong and unwavering support of her parents to go forward as she continues to do. Every American High School Student should read this book and understand the value of the gift of education we so easily can take for granted here. I certainly will introduce this book to many of the teachers I know. I recommend this book to all. It's a good read with good insight into small village Cambodian life.
Thavry Thon is a remarkable person with a stunning and inspiring story. My wife and I have traveled in Cambodia very recently and, over the years, we've traveled in many other nations where the conditions she overcame are all too apparent. Cambodia's recent history is in good part a horror story, with the genocidal Khmer Rouge (supported by far too many others, including the US government, as "punishment" of Vietnam for winning!) - they took her father as a child soldier. Fortunately, he survived and never had to kill anyone. She and her family struggled on the thinnest of incomes anyone in the US could imagine. She saw here friends grow up trapped in customs that made women menial workers on farms, with men faring little better, though still dominating socially. Her intellectual and moral growth recorded in this book is one case in a million. The book is of moderate length, and, being so hard to put down, is readily finished, but the stories will stay with you.
An amazing story, which gives voice to the life journey of 3 generations of Cambodian women.
Without using buzzwords, Thavry explains gender inequality very well by using her life journey as examples. The story is honest and intriguing to read. If I could have a request, I wish there were more detailed elaboration on each part. For example, the 1000-km bicycle across Cambodia is itself a book to be. Well done and looking forward to read more!
A rare and raw insight into a woman's life in Cambodia, who grew up into a society which should be better than what her parents experienced. Inspiring for everyone. Well written from a very personal perspective. As a resident of Cambodia I could follow her journey from the farm to the capital at a time when I lived there too.
Wonderful book! I bought 2 copies in Khmer and the young and teen girls in my care read it cover to cover. With few progressive role models in our area, it was a pleasure to find this book so the girls could have someone 'just like them' to look up to.
Thavry’s circumstances were not unusual for a young girl in Cambodia - growing up in a rural village, isolated from the world at large, with a lack of opportunities – in a culture that, for generations, teaches women to expect a life of service to their family, working on a farm or in a factory, to be married young and raise a family of their own. What is unique is that she was able to overcome her circumstances. With the support of her parents and by her own determination and resourcefulness, Thavry achieved that which could prevent the continuing cycle of poverty and dependence experienced by so many young women in many parts of the world – an education.

This is a story that should resonate with every young person growing up in Cambodia today. Thavry’s story speaks to the importance of education, particularly for women, and she has become a vocal advocate for gender equality and the end of “chbab srey,” the code of conduct for women that teaches women to be subservient to men.

I highly recommend that you add this book to your reading list and to that of your teenage son or daughter. Thavry writes about her life in the village, her parents’ dedication to her schooling and her persistence to gain the education she needed to become an independent woman. Anyone who reads it will be inspired.
